The Delhi government is working on water rationalisation project so that there is equal distribution of water supply across the city, water minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said on Tuesday.
Singh said that for the past several days complaints related to water supply have increased.
"Due to dry spell in Yamuna around 100 million gallons per day (MGD) of water production has been reduced. There are only 12-13 assemblies from where we get complaints get every summer, there are some areas which are getting more water and others are not getting enough. So, we are working on a water rationalisation project," Singh said.
For the past 10 days water supply has been affected in several parts of the city due to reduced raw water in Yamuna river.
"We are taking steps to resolve the issues. Out of 16,634 km water pipelines network 5,500 km line is 30 years old. There is a lot of leakage in these old lines. We are working to change all these lines to prevent water wastage and reduce contamination," he added.
The minister also said that Delhi Jal Board is also working on a project to cover the open DSB canal and supply water from a pipeline.
"Currently there is a heavy loss of water around 40 per cent in the DSB canal. Government has roped in IIT Roorkee to conduct a feasibility study to cover the canal and reduce losses of water," he added.
