Delhi registered the highest crime rate under the Government Railway Police (GRP) among all states and Union Territories in 2024, according to the latest data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
The national capital recorded a GRP crime rate of 24.3 cases per one lakh population during the year, placing it at the top of the national chart.
NCRB figures show that Delhi reported 5,315 railway-related criminal cases in 2024, up from 5,176 cases in 2023 and significantly higher than the 3,243 cases recorded in 2022, indicating a steady increase over the past three years.
In terms of the absolute number of cases, Maharashtra reported the highest tally with 20,519 GRP cases in 2024, followed by Madhya Pradesh with 12,931 cases and Gujarat with 8,220. However, Delhi emerged as the highest in terms of crime rate relative to population.
Kerala recorded the second-highest GRP crime rate at 19.5, while Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh followed with rates of 16.1 and 14.7 respectively.
The NCRB’s “Cases Registered by GRP” statistics cover offences registered by railway police units under the Indian Penal Code/Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita as well as Special and Local Laws.

Across India, a total of 83,699 GRP cases were registered in 2024, marginally lower than the 83,877 cases reported in 2023. The nationwide railway crime rate stood at 6.0 cases per one lakh population.
