M K Stalin, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, on Saturday criticised the proposed amendments to the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act, alleging that they unfairly target minority communities and pose a threat to religious freedom.

Addressing a public gathering in Nagercoil, the DMK president expressed concern that the changes could adversely impact thousands of Christian-run educational institutions across the country. He claimed that the amendments have caused anxiety within the community and accused the Centre of attempting to create a misleading impression through symbolic outreach efforts.

Stalin further alleged that there were fears among sections of the Christian community regarding possible control over their assets under the new provisions, describing the move as an infringement on their rights.

The proposed legislation includes provisions for the cancellation of an organisation’s FCRA registration once it expires or is not renewed. It also seeks to introduce a regulatory mechanism for overseeing, managing, and disposing of foreign contributions and related assets.

Responding to the criticism, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju defended the government, stating that minorities have received greater attention in recent years. He maintained that the amendments are aimed only at irregularities and clarified that only organisations with illegal FCRA accounts would face action.

Rijiju also accused the Congress of treating minority communities, particularly Muslims, as a vote bank, asserting that the government’s approach is inclusive and intended for the welfare of all sections of society.
