Heavy rainfall triggered flash floods in parts of Manipur's Churachandpur district, leaving one person missing, officials said on Friday.

A man, identified as Thangjohnson of New Lamka Vengnuam South, was swept away by the swollen waters of the Lanva river on Thursday evening, they said.

He was attempting to retrieve construction materials that had been washed away by the strong current during embankment construction work along the river when he was swept away, they added.

Search operations are underway to trace the missing man, while videos recorded by locals purportedly showed him being carried away by the floodwaters.

Deputy Commissioner Krishna Kumar visited the worst-affected localities, including Sielmat, Lower Chapel Lane, Hiangtam Lamka, Chiengkonpang and Beulalane, to assess the damage caused by the flash floods.

The deputy commissioner interacted with affected families, distributed relief materials and assured them of all possible assistance from the district administration.

He also said a damage assessment was underway to facilitate further relief and rehabilitation measures.
