Assam Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi on Monday launched a strong attack on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing him of making misleading claims and raising questions about alleged undisclosed assets and overseas business links.
Speaking to the media, Gogoi alleged that the Congress would expose what he described as inconsistencies related to the chief minister’s family assets and business interests abroad. He questioned whether Sarma’s family held a “Gold Card” in Dubai, owned property there, and whether such details had been disclosed in official election filings.
He further claimed that any failure to declare such assets could invite legal scrutiny, adding that appropriate action would be pursued if his party comes to power. Gogoi also made allegations linking Sarma’s network to illegal activities, asserting that these would be investigated.
The remarks came in response to recent accusations by Sarma against the Indian National Congress. The chief minister had claimed that the party’s influence in Assam was declining and alleged that some Congress leaders, including Gogoi and Pawan Khera, had connections with Pakistani social media groups in connection with a controversy involving his wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma.
Dismissing the allegations, Sarma described the documents circulated by Congress leaders as fabricated and digitally manipulated, alleging they originated from foreign sources. He also questioned Gogoi’s own international links and suggested such actions could be detrimental to national interests.
Sarma further stated that a police complaint had been lodged against Khera and others, adding that the issue had been escalated to the central government and could see further legal action.
The dispute centres on claims by Congress leaders that Sarma’s wife possessed multiple passports and had undisclosed business interests abroad, including in Dubai and the United States—allegations the chief minister has firmly denied, calling some of the documents “fake”.
