Wedding preparations at Delhi University’s Hansraj College for the son of Principal Rama Sharma have triggered protests by a section of students, who alleged that college infrastructure was being used for a private function, disrupting academic life.

Visuals circulating widely on social media showed the campus decorated with pink and white tents, lighting arrangements, and catering setups. Students claimed that portions of the college premises, including hostel facilities, were converted into accommodation for wedding guests. According to student groups, the wedding ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday.

The development sparked objections from students who said routine academic and extracurricular activities were affected by the event. Attempts to contact Principal Rama Sharma for her response were unsuccessful, as she did not respond to calls or messages.

On Monday, over 200 students under the banner of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) staged a protest inside the college campus. The demonstrators accused the administration of allowing public infrastructure to be used for personal purposes while placing restrictions on student activities.

In a statement, the SFI alleged that students are routinely denied access to college grounds after 4 pm for sports activities and are often refused permission to organise events such as fresher welcomes and farewell programmes. The student body also claimed that the annual ‘Khelo Hansraj’ sports tournament was rescheduled to make way for the wedding arrangements.

The protesters further raised concerns about the Hansraj Hostel, which they said had remained shut for nearly a year after being declared unfit for habitation, but was temporarily reopened to house wedding guests.

“The principal treats the campus like a private property, while students continue to struggle with limited access and inadequate facilities. The large turnout today reflects the growing resentment among students,” said Asikul Islam, Secretary of the SFI unit at Hansraj College.

Addressing the controversy, Delhi University Registrar Vikas Gupta dismissed the allegations and said there was no misuse of college resources.

“The principal resides in a residence allotted by the college and is permitted to host personal functions there. Such events have taken place earlier as well, and there is nothing irregular about it,” Gupta told ANI.

The protesting students demanded immediate restoration of full access to campus facilities, an inquiry into the alleged misuse of infrastructure, and a complete ban on private events within college premises. They warned of intensifying their agitation if their demands were not met.
