Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Thursday indicated that Parliament may reconvene soon to take up a “very important” piece of legislation, even as the current sitting of the Rajya Sabha is set to be adjourned.

Speaking in the Upper House, Rijiju said that the government would move to adjourn proceedings on what is expected to be the final day of the Budget Session, with plans to call members back within the next few weeks for key legislative business.

His remarks came in response to a query by Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, who sought clarity on the government’s agenda. Rijiju informed the House that two bills—the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill and the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill—would be taken up for passage before adjournment.

He added that discussions had already taken place with Opposition parties regarding upcoming legislative plans. According to him, the government intends to introduce a significant bill within the next two to three weeks, though details were not formally disclosed in the House.

The development comes amid speculation that the Centre may move forward with legislation linked to women’s reservation in legislatures, along with proposals related to delimitation and expansion of seats in the Lok Sabha.

Meanwhile, Jairam Ramesh said the Opposition prefers that any all-party meeting on the issue be held after the conclusion of ongoing assembly elections later this month.

Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge reiterated that the Congress supports the idea of reservation for women but emphasised that the proposed measures carry long-term implications and should be discussed carefully.

He also accused the government of attempting to derive political advantage by timing the introduction of such bills close to elections. Rijiju, however, rejected the allegation and maintained that the matter should not be politicised, asserting that the government remains committed to fulfilling its promise on women’s representation.
