Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said India currently contributes around 16 per cent to global economic growth and is set to play a larger role as a key driver of the world economy in the coming years.

Speaking at the ET Now Global Business Summit in New Delhi, the Prime Minister said India is positioned to emerge as a major engine of global progress amid shifting geopolitical and economic realities.

“Today, India accounts for 16 per cent of global growth. I am confident that this contribution will continue to rise. India is poised to power global growth and become a new growth engine for the world,” Modi said.

He noted that the international order is undergoing significant changes, with countries increasingly prioritising resilience and self-reliance.

“The earlier system was built on the idea of ‘one size fits all’, assuming the world economy would be at the centre and nations would function primarily as contributors. That model is now being questioned,” he said.

Modi added that India had anticipated these shifts and embedded resilience in its development strategy. Referring to the founding vision of NITI Aayog, he said India had made it clear that it would not replicate development models from other countries but would chart its own course.

The Prime Minister said the government’s reform agenda is being driven by conviction rather than compulsion.

“In this decade of the 21st century, India is moving ahead on a reform trajectory. The distinguishing feature is that these reforms are being undertaken with commitment and confidence,” he said.

He also highlighted that recent Union Budgets have focused not just on expenditure allocations but on measurable outcomes.

Citing global disruptions — including the pandemic, geopolitical tensions, conflicts and supply chain challenges — Modi said India’s performance during the past decade demonstrated its resilience.

“It is often said that a nation’s true strength is tested in times of crisis. Despite multiple disruptions, this decade has been marked by development, effective delivery and the strengthening of democracy in India,” he said.
