Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday described the Indian Armed Forces as a powerful symbol of national unity, saying their commitment to diversity, inclusivity and shared values reflects the strength of India's social and cultural fabric.

Addressing personnel at the headquarters of the Eastern Air Command in Shillong, Singh said the armed forces bring together people from different regions, communities and backgrounds in service of the nation, fostering mutual respect and a common sense of purpose.

“The Defence forces are a symbol of national unity. They represent an environment where diverse ideas coexist, cherished values are preserved, and mutual respect develops naturally,” he said.

The minister highlighted the growing participation of women in the military, stating that their expanding role signifies not only institutional progress but also India's long-standing commitment to equality and empowerment.

According to Singh, the increasing presence of women across various branches of the armed forces demonstrates how the country continues to uphold its cultural values while embracing modernisation and change.

He said the armed forces remain an example of discipline, dedication and inclusiveness, inspiring confidence among citizens and contributing significantly to national security and cohesion.

The event was attended by A P Singh, Chief of the Air Staff; Inderpal Singh Walia; and other senior officers of the Indian Air Force.
