Shimla
The Indian Army marked its 78th Army Day with a range of outreach programmes across the country aimed at inspiring young people to consider a career in the armed forces. As part of the celebrations, the Army Training Command (ARTRAC) organised a ‘Know Your Army’ exhibition at Shimla’s iconic Ridge ground.
The exhibition was inaugurated on Wednesday by retired Brigadier Harjit Singh along with Lieutenant General Sukriti Singh Dahiya, Chief of Staff, ARTRAC. The senior officers lauded the initiative, noting that such events play a vital role in familiarising citizens, particularly the youth, with the Indian Army’s mission and its contribution to national security.
To commemorate Army Day, ARTRAC showcased an extensive display of weapons and ammunition, organised a medical camp, created interactive selfie zones, and featured performances by the Army Pipe Band. The exhibition attracted large crowds, including local residents, tourists, NCC cadets, and young visitors, many of whom expressed interest in joining the Indian Army.
Speaking at the event, retired Brigadier Harjit Singh said the exhibition was designed to offer the public an up-close understanding of Army equipment and operations. He noted that the strong turnout of youth, tourists, and NCC cadets demonstrated the exhibition’s success in drawing attention to the Army’s functioning and responsibilities.
NCC cadet and Under Officer Riya Chauhan described the exhibition as deeply inspiring. She said it highlighted the sacrifices made by Army personnel to ensure the nation’s safety and served as a powerful motivational platform for young people. Expressing her own aspirations, she said her goal was to join the defence forces and serve the country, adding that Army Day events help instil a sense of responsibility and patriotism among the youth.
Tourists visiting Shimla also showed keen interest in the exhibition. Saylee Kurulkar, a visitor from Maharashtra, shared that this was her first opportunity to see Indian Army weapons up close. She described the experience as exciting and emotional, noting that it allowed her to connect with her father’s unfulfilled dream of joining the armed forces. She called the exhibition a rare and memorable experience and encouraged people to visit such public Army interactions.
Local youth Adheyan Singh Jhamta said the exhibition gave visitors a clear understanding of how different weapons are used and introduced them to aspects of Army life, including the growing role of women in the forces. He added that interacting with senior officers and learning directly from them was both motivating and inspiring.
