THE HAGUE
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday praised the Indian community in the Netherlands for its warmth, energy, and deep cultural roots, saying the enthusiasm of the diaspora in The Hague made him momentarily forget he was outside India.
Addressing members of the Indian community during a special diaspora event as part of his ongoing five-nation overseas tour, Modi said the atmosphere reminded him of festive celebrations back home.
He said interacting with overseas Indians is always a special experience and added that the affection and excitement shown by the community created an environment that felt no different from a festival being celebrated somewhere in India.
The prime minister commended the Indian diaspora for its growing contribution to Dutch society and the economy, saying every Indian feels proud of the achievements of compatriots living abroad.
He also conveyed gratitude to the people and government of the Netherlands on behalf of 1.4 billion Indians for the respect and opportunities extended to the Indian community.
Highlighting the journey of Indian families who settled overseas generations ago, Modi said their stories are not merely tales of migration but examples of resilience, determination, and progress achieved through struggle and hard work.
He noted that despite geographical distances and changing times, Indians across the world have managed to preserve their cultural identity, family values, and emotional connection with their roots.
Modi said many civilisations have faded over time, but India’s diverse cultural heritage continues to thrive in the hearts of its people across the globe.
Praising the community for preserving its linguistic and cultural traditions, he said while Indians abroad have embraced the languages and cultures of their adopted countries, they have also ensured that the languages of their ancestors continue to flourish across generations.
He also appreciated the role of local Indian community radio platforms in promoting Indian music, language, and cultural traditions among Dutch families.
Recalling the significance of May 16, the prime minister said the date holds special meaning in his political journey, as it marks the day in 2014 when the results of India’s general elections paved the way for a stable majority government under the BJP-led NDA after decades.
Reflecting on his years in public life, Modi said his journey has always been guided by service, responsibility, and the trust of millions of citizens.
He said the faith reposed in him by crores of Indians continues to inspire him and keeps him moving forward without fatigue.
Referring to his long political tenure, Modi said he considers himself fortunate to have received the trust and support of people throughout his years as chief minister and prime minister.
He added that for him, such support goes beyond electoral numbers and represents the blessings and emotional bond he shares with the people of India.
