A 45-year-old man who was allegedly beaten up by a group of people in Jharkhand’s Chatra district on suspicion of being a child-lifter has succumbed to his injuries, police said on Tuesday.

The incident occurred on Sunday night in the Piparwar police station area, where residents of Chiraiyatand and Kichto villages allegedly assaulted the victim, leaving him critically injured.

The man was identified as Rambali Rajwar, a resident of Barwatoli in the Ramgarh police station area of Ramgarh district, officials said.

Piparwar police station officer-in-charge Abhay Kumar said the victim died during treatment at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi on Monday.

“This is a clear case of mob lynching, and the police have initiated a thorough probe. Efforts have been intensified to identify all those involved in the assault,” Kumar said.

He added that a first information report (FIR) would be registered in connection with the incident and that the situation would become clearer after the autopsy report is received. No arrests have been made so far, he said.

According to police, the victim had gone to the area on Sunday night when a group of people allegedly attacked him. After receiving information about the incident, a police team from Piparwar station rescued him and took him to Bachra Regional Hospital.

As his condition deteriorated, he was later shifted to RIMS in Ranchi for advanced treatment, where he eventually succumbed to his injuries.
