New Delhi
The Lok Sabha was adjourned till 11 am on Monday (February 9) on Friday after repeated disruptions by Opposition members shortly after the general discussion on the Union Budget 2026–27 began.
As the House convened at 11 am, Opposition MPs raised slogans against the central government, disrupting proceedings. Despite multiple appeals by Speaker Om Birla to maintain order, the ruckus continued, prompting him to adjourn the House till 12 noon within five minutes of the session’s start.
When the House reconvened at noon, the situation remained unchanged, with Opposition MPs continuing sloganeering and displaying placards criticising the government. Krishna Kumar Tenneti, who was presiding over the proceedings, informed the House that the Speaker had rejected adjournment motion notices submitted by several MPs.
Tenneti proceeded with the listed business, and Union Ministers, beginning with BJP MP JP Nadda, rose to lay papers on the table. However, Opposition members moved closer to the Speaker’s chair, raising slogans and disrupting proceedings. Despite repeated requests from the presiding officer, the protests persisted, leading to the adjournment of the Lok Sabha till Monday.
Meanwhile, Opposition MPs staged a protest at Makar Dwar of Parliament against the India–US trade agreement, calling it a “trap deal.” Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra joined the protest as MPs raised slogans such as “Jo uchit samjho wahi karo” (Do whatever you think is right) and “tanashahi nahi chalegi” (dictatorship will not be accepted).
The slogan followed remarks by Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, who had taken a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech in the Rajya Sabha a day earlier.
On Thursday, Opposition MPs had also protested after Rahul Gandhi was not allowed to quote from the unpublished memoir of former Army Chief General M M Naravane during discussions on the 2020 India-China standoff.
Earlier, Prime Minister Modi, while replying to the Motion of Thanks on the President’s Address in the Rajya Sabha, criticised the Congress over Rahul Gandhi’s “traitor” remark against BJP MP Ravneet Singh Bittu, calling it an insult to the Sikh community and a reflection of the party’s “arrogance.”

The controversy followed a verbal exchange between Rahul Gandhi and Bittu near the Makar Dwar on Wednesday, during which both leaders traded sharp remarks.
