Raebareli
Congress leader and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the repeal of the MGNREGA Act, alleging that the government is prioritising bureaucrats over the welfare of the rural poor.
Addressing the media, Gandhi said the act was intended to ensure minimum wage and financial security for unemployed rural citizens, but its repeal centralises power and leaves the vulnerable population without protection. He accused the government of favouring corporate interests, specifically mentioning Reliance and Adani, while neglecting the poor. Gandhi also criticised the removal of Mahatma Gandhi's name from the reformed legislation.
During his two-day visit to Raebareli, Gandhi inaugurated the Raebareli Premier League at the Rajiv Gandhi Cricket Stadium, and will hold a “MGNREGA Chaupal” (community meeting) in Rohaniya, Unchahar. He is also set to inaugurate MPLADS works and meet senior party leaders, including a gathering at his guest house on the second day.
The Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee has planned a statewide campaign against the new law, including 30 Mahapanchayats. Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal outlined a three-phase “MGNREGA Bachao” program: Phase 2, from January 12 to 30, involves gram panchayat-level chaupals, Vidhan Sabha-level street meetings, and pamphlet distribution, culminating in peaceful sit-ins with MGNREGA workers on Martyrs’ Day, January 30.

Phase 3, running from January 31 to February 25, will feature district-level dharnas at DC and DM offices, state-level Vidhan Sabha gheraos, and four zonal rallies organised by the AICC. Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge are expected to participate in several events.
