A moderate earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale was recorded in the Bay of Bengal on Saturday, the National Center for Seismology (NCS) confirmed. According to official seismic data, the tremor struck at 11:48:21 am IST and originated at a shallow depth of around 15 kilometres beneath the Earth’s surface.

The epicentre of the quake was located in the Bay of Bengal at latitude 12.59 degrees North and longitude 92.34 degrees East. Due to its offshore location and moderate intensity, there were no immediate reports of damage to property or loss of life. However, shallow earthquakes are often felt more strongly near the epicentre, prompting authorities to closely monitor the situation.

Sharing details on social media platform X, the NCS stated: “EQ of M: 4.4, On: 13/12/2025 11:48:21 IST, Lat: 12.59 N, Long: 92.34 E, Depth: 15 Km, Location: Bay of Bengal.” The agency continues to track seismic developments in the region and advises coastal areas to remain alert, although no tsunami warning was issued.

The latest tremor comes a day after a significantly stronger earthquake measuring 6.8 magnitude jolted the North Pacific Ocean, underscoring the persistent seismic activity being witnessed across various parts of the world. While the two events are not directly linked, they highlight the dynamic nature of tectonic movements occurring along major fault lines globally.
