The Maharashtra government on Tuesday signed memoranda of understanding worth Rs 6.5 lakh crore with four major companies to boost nuclear energy generation in the state, a move expected to significantly strengthen India’s clean energy capacity and create more than 1.23 lakh jobs.

The agreements were signed with NTPC Limited, Adani Power Limited, Reliance Industries Limited and Lalitpur Power Generation Company Limited during a meeting held at Mantralaya in Mumbai.

According to the Maharashtra government, the proposed projects together aim to generate 25,400 MW of nuclear power capacity across the state.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the investments align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of transforming India into an energy-secure nation while pursuing the goal of net-zero carbon emissions.

Fadnavis stated that Maharashtra was committed to expanding clean energy infrastructure and ensuring the state remained a leader in sustainable power generation.

He described nuclear energy as an important pillar of the clean energy transition and said the projects would not only enhance electricity generation but also create large-scale employment opportunities across sectors.

Among the proposed investments, Reliance Industries Limited plans to invest Rs 2 lakh crore to establish 7,200 MW of nuclear power capacity, a project expected to create more than one lakh jobs.

Adani Power Limited will invest Rs 1.5 lakh crore for projects with a combined capacity of 6,000 MW, generating around 12,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities.

NTPC Limited has proposed an investment of Rs 1 lakh crore to develop 7,200 MW of capacity, which is expected to create nearly 5,000 jobs.

Meanwhile, Lalitpur Power Generation Company Limited will invest Rs 2 lakh crore to build projects with a capacity of 5,000 MW, generating approximately 3,000 jobs.
