Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Monday said the state government is taking steps to fast-track the exploration of oil and natural gas resources, while simultaneously working to tap its green energy potential.

Speaking after inaugurating “Saksham”, a two-week awareness campaign on oil and gas conservation in Aizawl, the chief minister said the government is regularly following up with stakeholders to ensure that exploration activities in the state progress at a faster pace. He added that parallel efforts are underway to identify and develop opportunities in renewable energy.

Lalduhoma drew attention to India’s dependence on imported energy, pointing out that the country is the world’s third-largest consumer of oil and gas and imports close to 80 per cent of its total requirement. He cautioned that excessive use of fossil fuels not only exhausts non-renewable resources but also worsens air pollution due to emissions of carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide.

Emphasising the importance of conservation, the chief minister said prudent fuel use today would help secure the future of coming generations, while also benefiting the economy and the environment.

He also informed that work on extending domestic gas pipeline connectivity to Aizawl is progressing, with the pipeline network being laid from Tripura.

Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister B Lalchhanzova, who was present at the event, said the state government is focused on ensuring a reliable and uninterrupted gas supply. He added that the LPG bottling plant at Mualkhang near Aizawl is being upgraded and plans are also in place to set up an oil depot in the state.
