Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita met Fiji’s Minister for Finance, Commerce and Business Development, Esrom Immanuel, on Tuesday, with the two leaders reviewing the full spectrum of bilateral relations between India and Fiji.

Sharing details of the meeting on social media platform X, Margherita said the discussions focused on strengthening development partnership, enhancing capacity-building initiatives, and exploring avenues for cooperation in digital infrastructure.

“Pleased to meet Hon. Esrom Immanuel, Minister for Finance, Commerce and Business Development of Fiji, this morning. Held productive discussions covering the entire gamut of India-Fiji bilateral relations and shared priorities, with particular focus on development partnership, capacity building, and possibilities for cooperation in digital infrastructure, including ongoing collaboration and the way ahead,” he said in his post.

The meeting is part of a series of high-level engagements aimed at deepening India’s engagement with Fiji across multiple sectors.

Earlier in January, Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan held a bilateral meeting with Fiji’s Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Tomasi Tunabuna, at Krishi Bhawan in New Delhi. According to a statement from the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, the two sides reviewed existing cooperation and identified new areas for future collaboration.

An official statement issued last week said the ministers held wide-ranging discussions on matters of mutual interest and agreed to extend the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for another five years. They also decided to set up a Joint Working Group (JWG) to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in the agriculture sector.

The discussions covered key areas such as student exchange programmes, training and capacity-building initiatives, and technology sharing, including small-scale agricultural machinery and digital agriculture tools. The two sides also explored cooperation in strengthening research infrastructure, genetic exchange programmes, and sharing best practices to reduce food loss and waste.
