The national capital remained under dense cloud cover on Tuesday as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for several parts of the city, warning of moderate thunderstorms, rainfall, gusty winds and a possibility of hail in isolated pockets.

The weather warning has been issued for New Delhi, Central Delhi, West Delhi, North West Delhi, Outer North Delhi, North East Delhi, Shahdara, East Delhi, and parts of South and South West Delhi for the next few hours, with unsettled weather conditions expected through the day.

The IMD said some areas could also witness hailstorms along with thunder and rain activity. The maximum temperature in the city is expected to hover around 33 degrees Celsius, noticeably below the seasonal average.

Mahesh Palawat of Skymet Weather said the recent spell of rain across north India has led to a drop in temperatures, adding that similar weather conditions are likely to continue over the next couple of days, keeping daytime temperatures below normal.

Meanwhile, Delhi’s air quality showed marked improvement, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded at 69 during the morning, placing it in the ‘satisfactory’ category.
