New Delhi
The government informed the Lok Sabha on Tuesday that more than 7,500 applications seeking permission for protests and public gatherings have been received by Delhi Police, all of which have been processed.
Responding to a query by AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi, Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai said that a total of 7,511 applications had been submitted up to March 15, 2026, and all of them have been disposed of.
According to the district-wise data shared in the House, the New Delhi district recorded the highest number of requests at 4,657. This was followed by the Central district with 744 applications and the South-East district with 646. In contrast, no applications were reported from Shahdara and Outer districts, while the South district received just one.
Owaisi had also sought details regarding the issuance of prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code and Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita across states and Union territories since 2010.
In response, Rai stated that matters related to public order and policing fall under the jurisdiction of states, and therefore such data is not maintained centrally for the entire country.
However, for Delhi, the government provided figures showing that police had issued 33,640 orders under Section 144 of the CrPC and 10,118 orders under Section 163 of the BNSS up to March 15, 2026.

The minister added that requests for protests are typically denied due to administrative constraints, failure to meet prescribed conditions, concerns related to law and order, or when permissions are sought at very short notice.
