A Hindu student of the fourth standard of Kozhikode, Kerala, made headlines and won hearts by bagging the first prize in a Quran recitation competition held at the Thodnoor Sub-District Arts Festival.

Parvathy won the award at the Thodannur sub-district arts festival held in Kozhikode. She studies at Chemmarathur LP School. Her twin sister, Parvana, is also good at Arabic.

Both the sisters learned Arabic from their school teacher Ruqiya.

Parvathy's father, Nalesh Bobby, is an IT professional working in Kozhikode, while her mother, Dina Prabha, is an English teacher. Parvathy's parents pushed her into learning Arabia as they believe it was important to learn a new language.

The parents are firm in their stand that all children should learn a new language that they are not familiar with.

Parvati's school teachers feel that she has proved that language has no religion and that a language only empowers one. It helps build bridges between two communities and cultures.

While many Muslims have appreciated Parvathy's achievement and her parents for encouraging her to learn Arabic, Prominent Islamic scholar Prof. Akhtarul Wasey said that Parvathy’s achievement is happy augury but he is not surprised.

“This reflects the civilization and culture of our country and what we call Ganga Jamuni tehzeeb (inclusive culture),” he said while congratulating Parvathy.

He said it was great of the parents to encourage their daughter to learn Arabic in the current environment and allow her to participate in the Quran recitation competition. "This is what makes us Indians and the country India," he said.

Prof Akhtarul Wasey added that this news was not surprising because it’s not the first time that such a thing has happened. “You have the example of Dr. Dharmendra Nath who wrote a book called "Our Messenger" in love with the Prophet of Islam. Naats written in praise of Rasoolullah were composed by many many non-Muslim poets.”

He also said many Muslim musicians and singers were involved in singing and composing Bhajans in Hindi movies. Singer Mohammad Rafi, lyricist Shakeel Badayoni, and musician Muhammad Naushad have composed songs and hymns in praise of the Hindu Gods.

He said, "This is our cultural heritage; this is India. Blessed are those who maintain this tradition and heritage."
