Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday expressed deep sorrow over the passing of P G Baruah, Editor and Managing Director of The Assam Tribune Group, remembering him as a towering figure in Indian journalism.
Baruah, aged 93, passed away in Guwahati on Sunday evening.
In a message shared on social media platform X, the Prime Minister said Baruah would be remembered for his lasting contributions to the media landscape. He also noted Baruah’s strong commitment to Assam’s development and his efforts to promote the state’s rich cultural heritage.
“His dedication to journalism and to the progress of Assam will always be remembered. My thoughts are with his family and admirers. Om Shanti,” the Prime Minister said.
A recipient of the Padma Shri, P G Baruah was born in Dibrugarh in 1932. He led The Assam Tribune for several decades, carrying forward the legacy of the newspaper founded by his father, Radha Gobinda Baruah.

Established in 1939, The Assam Tribune has remained one of the most influential English-language dailies in the northeastern region. Baruah also served as Chairman Emeritus of The Assam Tribune Group, playing a pivotal role in shaping credible and independent journalism in Assam and beyond.
