Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Odisha Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati and Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Monday paid rich tributes to renowned freedom fighter and social reformer Parbati Giri on the occasion of her birth centenary.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Leader of Opposition in the Odisha Assembly, Naveen Patnaik, also remembered Giri and acknowledged her contributions to the freedom struggle and social reform.

Born on January 19, 1926, in Samlaipadar village of Bargarh district, Parbati Giri joined the Quit India Movement at the young age of 16 after being inspired by Mahatma Gandhi. Her active participation in the movement led to her imprisonment for two years during the struggle against British rule.

In a post on X, Prime Minister Modi paid homage to the freedom fighter, describing her role in the national movement as commendable. He also highlighted her lifelong dedication to community service, particularly in areas such as healthcare, women’s empowerment and cultural development. Modi noted that he had spoken about her contributions during a recent episode of his radio programme Mann Ki Baat.

Governor Kambhampati, in his message, said that Giri’s selfless service for the upliftment of the poor, the marginalised and women would continue to inspire generations.

Chief Minister Majhi referred to Parbati Giri as “Odisha’s daughter of fire”, calling her life a powerful symbol of sacrifice and service. In a social media post, he said her contributions — from the freedom struggle to social work and women’s empowerment — would remain unforgettable and serve as a guiding light for society.

Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik said Giri’s sacrifices for India’s Independence were unparalleled. He also noted that her work for the welfare of tribal communities continues to be a lasting source of inspiration.
