Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Friday welcomed the recently concluded peace agreement between the United States and Iran, describing it as a positive development for global stability and economic recovery.
Speaking to reporters, Tharoor said that any move towards peace should be supported, particularly by India, which has traditionally advocated dialogue and peaceful conflict resolution.
“Whenever tensions are resolved and peace prevails, it benefits not only the countries involved but also the wider world. We have already seen how disruptions caused by conflict affected economies across Asia, with industries facing uncertainty and supply chains being impacted,” he said.
The Congress leader noted that the agreement could help restore the flow of key commodities and resources that had been affected by the prolonged standoff between Washington and Tehran.
According to Tharoor, India could particularly benefit from the resumption of imports such as oil, natural gas, fertilisers and aluminium, which had faced disruptions due to regional instability.
“We hope that supplies of oil, gas, fertilisers and other essential materials that were affected by the conflict will now resume smoothly. This will be beneficial not only for India but also for economies around the world,” he said.
Reaffirming India’s commitment to peace, Tharoor added that the country should welcome and support initiatives that contribute to international stability.
His comments came after reports that US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed a 14-point memorandum of understanding aimed at ending hostilities, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and establishing a framework for negotiations on sanctions relief and Iran’s nuclear programme.
