Union Minister George Kurian on Thursday said several state governments are taking steps toward implementing a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in accordance with constitutional provisions.

Responding to a question from reporters, Kurian said the Constitution itself speaks about the UCC, and states are acting on that basis.

Earlier in the day, the minister attended a national seminar organised by National Commission for Minorities on the theme Contribution of Jain Community in Indian Economy, Education and Philanthropy.

Kurian praised the Jain community for its role in the country’s economic growth and social development, adding that the government would provide all possible support to further strengthen its contributions.

Chaitanya Kumar Kashyap and Alka Upadhyay were also present at the seminar.

Uttarakhand became the first state to implement the UCC in January 2025 under the BJP government.

Last month, Gujarat passed a UCC Bill, becoming the second state to adopt such legislation. The law provides a common legal framework for marriage, divorce and inheritance across religions, bans polygamy, and requires registration of live-in relationships.

Earlier this month, the cabinet of Chhattisgarh approved the formation of a high-level committee headed by a retired judge to draft a UCC framework for the state, with the stated aim of promoting religious and gender equality.
