Long before Md Talib Khan began his own journey, he had already felt the power of quiet, meaningful leadership. He was just 20 years old when his grandfather, Abbas Khan, passed away. He had always looked up to his grandfather, and, therefore, his passing was a setback for him.

In Makhdumpur, Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh, Abbas Khan was more than a village Pradhan. He was a figure of trust and transformation, having served in the role until 1995. Even years after his tenure, his work continued to shape lives, especially through the institution he built with a vision far ahead of its time.

Walking on the footprints of the Patriarch, Md Talib Khan can, nowadays, be seen distributing ration packets to struggling families, helping people access necessities, or addressing fears around public health in his native village. He has built a reputation as someone who shows up when it matters most.

Abbas Khan’s biggest contribution to the community is the founding of Madrassa Jamuria, an institution that broke barriers by prioritising girls' education across communities in its time.

At a time when access to education for girls was limited, especially in rural areas, he ensured that the school provided facilities for young girls to study without interference. Over time, he affiliated the institution with distant colleges, enabling students to pursue higher education up to the postgraduate level.

“Parents were often reluctant to send their daughters far away due to lack of facilities and safety concerns,” Talib explains. “That’s why my grandfather started this initiative. He brought education closer to them”

Growing up, Talib witnessed firsthand the respect his grandfather commanded, not through authority, but through service. “He believed that real leadership lies in creating opportunities for others,” Talib says. “That idea has stayed with me.”

After his grandfather's passing, Talib and his family, with the help of the government, have opened a skill development institution for women.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Talib stepped forward with a hands-on approach. He organised the distribution of ration packets to families who had lost livelihoods or were unable to sustain themselves during lockdowns.

At a time when misinformation and hesitation around vaccines were widespread, he also took it upon himself to speak directly to people, especially in underserved areas, encouraging them to get vaccinated. “There was a lot of fear and confusion,” Talib recalls.

“People were unsure, some were scared. I felt it was important to stand with them, talk to them, and help them make informed decisions.” His efforts were not limited to persuasion; he often accompanied individuals to vaccination centres, ensuring that access and awareness went hand in hand.

Talib’s father also played a crucial role in shaping his outlook, reinforcing the importance of community engagement and responsibility. Together, these influences instilled in him a belief that change begins at the grassroots level, through consistent and compassionate action.

Today, Talib is not only continuing his own social initiatives but is also actively working to support and strengthen his grandfather’s vision. He remains closely connected to Madrassa Jamuria, contributing to its functioning and ensuring that it continues to serve as a centre of learning for girls.

For Talib, the school is more than just an institution; it is a symbol of opportunity and empowerment. “Education is the strongest tool we have,” he says. “If we can ensure that girls are educated, we are not just changing one life, we are uplifting entire families and communities.”

Alongside his involvement with the school, Talib continues his grassroots work, particularly focusing on immediate community needs. His ration distribution drives are carried out with care and discretion, ensuring that those in need receive help without feeling exposed or uncomfortable. “Helping someone is not about charity,” he reflects.

“It is about responsibility. If we are in a position to support others, we should do it with dignity and respect.”

His approach to contributing to society is simple yet impactful: identify a need, step in, and follow through. Whether it is addressing hunger, promoting health awareness, or supporting education, Talib’s efforts are guided by a clear purpose. Looking ahead, he hopes to expand his work, especially in the areas of education and community awareness. He believes that the foundation laid by his grandfather remains highly relevant and must be carried forward with renewed commitment.

“I am just trying to continue what my grandfather started,” he says. “If I can contribute even a small part in keeping that vision alive, I will consider it meaningful.”
