Rajya Sabha nominated member Sudha Murty on Thursday urged the government to recognise social innovators, stressing that while technical achievements are widely celebrated, solutions addressing everyday challenges often go unnoticed.

Speaking during Zero Hour, Murty cited examples such as the idli grinder, which transformed lives—particularly of women—yet its inventors remain largely unacknowledged. She also referenced the Japanese inventor of the QR code, who chose not to patent it, making the innovation freely accessible worldwide for the welfare of many.

Highlighting existing awards in corporate social responsibility and technology, Murty called for a dedicated “social innovation” award to recognise and respect individuals whose work benefits society. Drawing on her own experience in the social sector, she said such recognition can have a profound societal impact.
