The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a petition demanding an investigation into alleged irregularities and corruption surrounding the trust vote held in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on May 13.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice V Mohana declined to entertain the plea, stating that it was founded on “vague, wild and casual allegations” and lacked credible evidence to support the accusations.

The trust vote was a crucial test for the government led by C Joseph Vijay, whose Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) administration secured a comfortable victory with the backing of 25 rebel AIADMK legislators. The vote took place amid a walkout by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).

Although TVK did not possess a majority on its own in the 234-member Assembly, Vijay managed to gather support from the Congress, VCK, CPI, CPI(M) and IUML, taking the government's strength to 120 legislators—above the required majority mark of 118.

The successful trust vote was widely viewed as a significant political achievement for Vijay, highlighting his ability to build alliances beyond his popularity as a film star.

Opposition parties had alleged horse-trading during the trust vote process. However, Vijay strongly denied the allegations, maintaining that the support extended to his government was based on political consensus rather than inducements.
