United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres arrived in the national capital on Wednesday to attend the India‑AI Impact Summit, with the visit expected to further strengthen India’s partnership with the UN.

Official Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs Randhir Jaiswal said Guterres was warmly received on arrival by Minister of State for Corporate Affairs and Road Transport and Highways Harsh Malhotra. In a post on X, Jaiswal said India remains committed to multilateralism, sustainable development and global peace, and noted that the UN chief’s visit would deepen cooperation between India and the United Nations.

The UN has been advocating the use of artificial intelligence as a tool for inclusivity. According to the organisation, AI encompasses a wide range of self-learning and adaptive technologies, including vision systems, speech recognition and robotics, which can enhance human capabilities. The UN believes AI can help accelerate progress on nearly 80 per cent of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by reducing inequalities and strengthening the UN system’s work.

With the Global AI Impact Summit underway, several world leaders and senior executives have gathered in New Delhi. Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit with Croatia Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic, Sundar Pichai, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, Finland Prime Minister Petteri Orpo and Spanish President Pedro Sanchez.

Seychelles Vice President Sebastien Pillay, Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam and Sweden’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy, Business and Industry Ebba Busch also arrived in the capital to participate in the summit.
