Barabanki

An Army jawan has alleged that he was assaulted by supporters of a Samajwadi Party MLA after objecting to purported remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a public meeting in Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki, police said on Friday.

The incident occurred on Thursday evening in Hansemau village under Satrikh police station limits.

The complainant, Vikas Deep, who has been serving in the Army for 18 years and is currently on leave, alleged that he was attacked after he objected to remarks made by SP MLA Suresh Yadav.

According to the complaint, Deep said he took the microphone to protest what he described as objectionable language used during the rally, following which the MLA’s supporters allegedly abused and assaulted him. He claimed he sustained injuries after being punched and kicked before being rescued by people present at the venue.

The soldier has sought registration of an FIR and legal action against the MLA and those involved. He also said that he has informed Army authorities about the incident.

However, event organiser Sher Bahadur Singh denied the allegations, stating that while there was some jostling after the jawan attempted to snatch the microphone, no assault took place.

Station House Officer D K Singh said police have received a complaint and are also examining related social media inputs.

“An investigation is underway and appropriate action will be taken based on the findings,” he said.
