West Bengal polls phase 1: Turnout crosses 78% by 3 pm amid clashes

West Bengal recorded a strong 78.77 per cent voter turnout by 3 pm in the first phase of Assembly elections on Thursday, even as scattered violence, intimidation allegations, and attacks on candidates were reported from several districts.

Polling began at 7 am across 152 constituencies in 16 districts, with long queues seen outside booths throughout the day. Turnout rose steadily from 18.76 per cent in the first two hours, to 41.11 per cent by 11 am, 62.18 per cent by 1 pm, and crossed 78 per cent by afternoon. Officials said the final turnout could rise further as voting continued till evening.

The first phase will decide the fate of 1,478 candidates, including 167 women, in the 294-member Assembly.

Violence and Tension in Several Areas

In Kumarganj, Suvendu Sarkar alleged he was assaulted and his vehicle vandalised while heading to a polling booth. The Trinamool Congress denied the charge.

In Asansol Dakshin, Agnimitra Paul said stones were thrown at her car, shattering the rear window. Police said an investigation was underway.

Clashes were also reported in Naoda between supporters of the Aam Janata Unnayan Party and the ruling TMC, prompting baton charge by security forces.

In Labhpur, a BJP polling agent was allegedly attacked, while in Chanchal another BJP worker was reportedly assaulted.

Complaints and Security Action

Election authorities said around 500 complaints were received till noon, in addition to 375 complaints through the cVIGIL app. Security personnel were deployed in sensitive areas, and central forces intervened at several places to ensure access to polling booths.

Leaders React

Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari alleged “TMC-backed criminals” were intimidating voters.

The Trinamool Congress countered by accusing the BJP of trying to disturb peaceful polling. Senior TMC leader Anubrata Mondal described the polling as peaceful and urged people to remain calm.

Key Battle

The first phase covers all 54 seats in North Bengal, along with several constituencies in South Bengal and Junglemahal, making it a crucial contest between the ruling TMC and the BJP.
