The Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY), functioning under the Ministry of Ayush, observed World Meditation Day on Sunday by hosting a series of focused meditation sessions that drew scholars, yoga experts and meditation practitioners from across the country.
The programme highlighted how traditional yogic practices and modern medical research are increasingly converging to address the global challenge of stress and mental health disorders.
Speaking at the event, MDNIY Director Dr Kashinath Samagandi underscored the growing clinical importance of meditation in the fast-paced modern world. He pointed out that nearly 60 to 70 per cent of stress-related conditions are linked to workplace pressures, emphasising the need to harmonise the body and mind through techniques outlined in the Patanjala Yogasutra.
Referring to recent scientific studies, Dr Samagandi explained that neuroimaging research has shown that chanting ‘Om’ helps reduce activity in the amygdala, the part of the brain associated with fear and negative emotions, by stimulating the prefrontal cortex, which governs emotional regulation. An fMRI-based study has demonstrated marked deactivation of the amygdala during loud ‘Om’ chanting when compared to a resting state.
He also cited research findings from AIIMS, Delhi, which indicate that Yoga Nidra leads to measurable changes in brain activity linked to deep relaxation, emotional balance and reduced systemic inflammation, making it an effective tool for stress reduction.
Adding a spiritual perspective to the discussion, Swami Muktimayananda of the Ramakrishna Mission, Delhi, urged participants to seek lasting peace by turning inward. He noted that calming mental disturbances begins with self-awareness and understanding one’s true nature — Sat Chit Anand Swaroop — rooted in compassion and love.
He further stressed the importance of practising Yama and Niyama to overcome ego, jealousy and unfulfilled desires, which often disrupt inner peace.
