A Food Carnival being organised alongside the SARAS Fair at Shimla’s historic Ridge Ground has emerged as a major draw for tourists, while creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for rural women across Himachal Pradesh.
Held under the Government of India’s Rural Livelihood Programme, the 10-day event has attracted large footfall for its authentic Himachali cuisine. Over 100 rural women, associated with self-help groups and societies, are participating through multiple stalls featuring traditional food and handmade products.
The main attraction of the carnival is its 17 food stalls, run by more than 50 women, serving traditional hill dishes such as Kangri Dham, Hamirpuri Dham, Bilaspuri Dham and regional cuisines from Kinnaur to Lahaul-Spiti. The food stalls have received an enthusiastic response from both tourists and locals.
Visitors said the carnival filled a gap for those seeking authentic local cuisine while also supporting women’s empowerment. Several tourists noted that the initiative combined cultural experience with meaningful livelihood generation.
Women from all 12 districts of Himachal Pradesh are participating in the fair, representing diverse blocks and communities. Participants said the platform has not only generated income but also boosted confidence and self-reliance by allowing them to interact directly with customers and promote traditional food such as Siddu.
Organisers said the fair is being held from December 11 to December 20 with the objective of promoting rural livelihoods. The stalls have been provided free of cost, focusing on income generation as well as skill development, including communication and presentation skills.
According to the organisers, food stalls alone have recorded sales of over ₹10 lakh within the first few days of the event.

Apart from food, stalls selling Chamba chappals, HIMIRA products and other rural handicrafts are also drawing visitors, showcasing Himachal Pradesh’s cultural diversity. The Food Carnival has strengthened the link between tourism, traditional cuisine and women’s empowerment, making it one of Shimla’s key attractions this season.
