Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra has shared his predictions for the Orange Cap and Purple Cap winners ahead of the Indian Premier League 2026 season, backing Indian players to dominate both categories.
The tournament is set to begin with a high-profile clash between defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad in Bengaluru.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra suggested that the race for the Orange Cap—awarded to the highest run-scorer—will likely be led by top-order batters. He named Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli as his leading contenders, while adding that KL Rahul could also emerge as a strong candidate if Delhi Capitals progress deep into the tournament.
Chopra expressed particular confidence in Jaiswal, expecting him to deliver a standout season. He noted that a tally of around 600–650 runs could not only put the young opener in contention for the Orange Cap but also strengthen his case for a return to India’s white-ball squads.
Jaiswal has been one of the most consistent performers in recent IPL seasons, amassing over 1,600 runs in the last three years for Rajasthan Royals at an impressive average and strike rate. Despite his strong performances, Chopra pointed out that he is yet to claim the Orange Cap.
On the bowling front, Chopra identified Jasprit Bumrah and Varun Chakravarthy as frontrunners for the Purple Cap, awarded to the highest wicket-taker. He ultimately leaned towards Bumrah, citing his match-winning ability—provided he remains fit throughout the season.
Bumrah, who represents Mumbai Indians, had a solid previous season, finishing among the top wicket-takers despite playing fewer matches. Meanwhile, Chakravarthy, a key bowler for Kolkata Knight Riders, also featured prominently in the wicket charts last year.

Chopra added that Bumrah’s fitness will be crucial, especially after his recent visit to the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, suggesting that his availability could significantly influence the outcome of the Purple Cap race.
