Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar expects leg-spinner Kuldeep Yadav to be drafted into the playing XI for India’s high-voltage T20 World Cup match against Pakistan on Sunday, possibly replacing pacer Arshdeep Singh.
Arshdeep endured a tough outing against Namibia on Thursday, conceding runs and failing to complete his full quota of four overs, even though India registered a comprehensive 93-run victory to extend their winning run in the tournament.
“All our bowlers picked up wickets, but Arshdeep did not bowl his full four overs, while Shivam Dube bowled two and Hardik Pandya completed his spell. This could indicate that Kuldeep Yadav may come in for Arshdeep against Pakistan,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports’ Amul Cricket Live.
The batting great also noted that conditions in Sri Lanka are traditionally favourable for spin bowling and that India has often opted for a three-spinner combination in such conditions.
“Sri Lankan pitches assist spinners, and India has a history of playing three spinners. I would expect Kuldeep to be part of the XI against Pakistan in Colombo,” he added.
Gavaskar further suggested that skipper Suryakumar Yadav appeared to manage his bowling resources with the Pakistan fixture in mind.
“Hardik bowling the first over could be a sign that Arshdeep may not feature in the next game. Varun Chakaravarthy bowled just two overs, but had he bowled his full quota, he might have taken five or six wickets. That’s the beauty of Varun — he delivers wickets whenever he is introduced,” Gavaskar said.
He also praised Axar Patel, who returned figures of two wickets in three overs, calling it an encouraging sign ahead of the crucial contest.
Commenting on Sanju Samson, who opened the innings in place of the unwell Abhishek Sharma, Gavaskar pointed out a technical flaw despite Samson’s brisk 22 off eight balls.
“Sanju has a tendency to go too deep into the crease and rely on the flick shot. It becomes a hit-or-miss option. Namibia planned their field well to exploit that weakness,” he said.

However, Gavaskar added that the brief cameo would have boosted Samson’s confidence. “If he plays against Pakistan, he needs to spend more time in the middle and build his innings, especially when opening with the new ball,” he said.
