Jammu and Kashmir Sports Minister Satish Sharma on Monday assured a time-bound and impartial inquiry into the Santosh Trophy team selection, following BJP allegations of discrimination against players from the Jammu region.

Addressing concerns, Sharma said on social media: “Violation of the merit-based selection policy by anyone will result in severe consequences and appropriate punitive measures.”

The controversy arose after J&K BJP spokesperson Rajni Sethi claimed that all Jammu players were rejected, while only Kashmir players were selected, alleging an “illegal and discriminatory” process.

Responding, a Sports Council official clarified that the selection process lasted over one-and-a-half months, conducted in coordination with the All India Football Federation, and emphasized merit-based transparency. Out of 51 trialists, 32 players (including 8 from Jammu) were shortlisted for the residential coaching camp held in Jammu from November 21 to December 12. Ultimately, 23 players were selected for the team, including four from Jammu, with one more joining later due to examinations.
