Surprise package Zimbabwe national cricket team and hosts Sri Lanka national cricket team will lock horns in a high-stakes Group B clash of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup here on Thursday, with both sides already assured of a place in the Super 8s. The contest will decide the group topper and could influence match-ups in the next round.

Sri Lanka have looked formidable on home turf, using their familiarity with conditions to beat Oman and Ireland before registering a comprehensive eight-wicket win over Australia. Led by Dasun Shanaka, the Islanders have shown balance across departments and will aim to carry their momentum forward.

A return to form by opener Pathum Nissanka, who struck a fluent century against Australia, has bolstered Sri Lanka’s top order. Wicketkeeper-batter Kusal Mendis has been equally consistent, scoring half-centuries in all three group matches so far. However, concerns remain over Kusal Perera, who has struggled for runs since last year’s T20 tri-series in Pakistan.

With the ball, Sri Lanka will bank on the experience of Dushmantha Chameera and the unorthodox pace of Matheesha Pathirana, while spinners Maheesh Theekshana and Dushan Hemantha add variety on slower surfaces.

Zimbabwe’s qualification has been one of the stories of the tournament. Their stunning 23-run victory over Australia, combined with a rain-abandoned game against Ireland, sealed a historic Super 8s berth and ended Australia’s campaign.

Opener Brian Bennett has impressed with unbeaten knocks of 64 and 48, while the middle order—featuring Sikandar Raza, Ryan Burl and skipper Craig Ervine—has provided stability. Veteran pacer Blessing Muzarabani remains their spearhead, having dismantled Australia with a four-wicket haul.

With both teams already through, pride and positioning are on the line—setting up a compelling contest between a confident host nation and a fearless challenger.
