Asian Games champion Tajinderpal Singh Toor secured the gold medal in the men’s shot put with a 20m-plus throw on the opening day of the Indian Open Throws Competition at the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports on Saturday.

The 31-year-old athlete from Punjab registered a best throw of 20.51 metres — his season’s best — to top the podium in the two-day meet being held in Patiala.

“I’m satisfied with my performance,” Toor said after the event.

During the competition, Toor crossed the 20m mark in two other attempts as well, recording throws of 20.02m and 20.07m, indicating strong form during his training phase. His remaining three attempts were fouls.

Toor currently holds the national record of 21.17m, which he set in June 2023. The experienced shot putter is aiming to reach peak form later this year as he prepares to defend his title at the Asian Games in Japan.

The men’s hammer throw title was claimed by Damneet Singh, who produced a winning effort of 70.64m while competing for Reliance. His throw narrowly missed the national record of 70.73m.
