Hosts Sri Lanka face a challenging start to their T20 World Cup campaign as they lock horns with an unpredictable Ireland in their opening Group B encounter on Sunday, aiming to recover from a disappointing build-up to the tournament.

Sri Lanka enter the competition short on confidence after suffering a 0-3 whitewash at home against England in their final preparatory T20I series. The comprehensive defeat exposed gaps in both batting and bowling, particularly in pressure situations, forcing the team to reassess its approach ahead of the global event they are co-hosting with India.

Inconsistency has been a recurring issue for the former champions, who lifted the T20 World Cup in 2014. While the squad appears balanced on paper and enjoys home conditions, translating potential into performance remains the key challenge.

Placed in a competitive group alongside Australia, Ireland, Zimbabwe and Oman, Sri Lanka are expected to fight for a Super Stage berth. However, Ireland and Zimbabwe are capable of springing surprises, making every match crucial.

The hosts will rely heavily on their top order, with Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis expected to provide solid starts. Young opener Kamil Mishara, who has featured regularly in recent times, will be keen to make an impact on the big stage. Veteran Kusal Janith Perera adds experience, while the middle order includes Kamindu Mendis, Charith Asalanka and Janith Liyanage.

Captain Dasun Shanaka remains a vital cog, offering finishing firepower and seam-bowling options.

Sri Lanka’s pace attack will be led by Dushmantha Chameera and Matheesha Pathirana, though the absence of injured Eshan Malinga is a setback. Pramod Madushan has been drafted in as his replacement. The spin department features Wanindu Hasaranga, Dunith Wellalage and Maheesh Theekshana, with Hasaranga looking to rediscover form after a lean patch against England.

Ireland, captained by experienced campaigner Paul Stirling, arrive with confidence following series victories over Italy and the UAE. The side boasts key performers such as Harry Tector and left-arm pacer Josh Little, but their tendency to be inconsistent could prove costly.

This is Ireland’s eighth appearance in the T20 World Cup, having featured in every edition since 2009. If they manage to upset Sri Lanka, the Irish could significantly boost their chances of advancing from the group.
