Urdu writer Tarannum dies of Covid-19

Tarannum Riyaz, a famous Urdu story writer hailing from Kashmir today died of Covid-19 here.

She passed away almost a month after her husband Dr Riyaz Punjabi, former vice-chancellor of the  University of Kashmir, had died of Covid-19.

Dr Tarannum had been on the ventilator for past few days.

 She was 62 years old. She is survived by their two sons.

Tarannum was a well-known broadcaster of All India Radio and also a presenter of  Doordarshan.

In literary circles, Tarannum was known equally for her poetry, stories and novels. She has well known in the literary circles of the capital.

Tahira has done her PhD degree in Urdu from the University of Kashmir.

She was the recipient of awards of Delhi Urdu Academy and UP Urdu Academy in 2006. She has also edited a book on Women Urdu writers of the 20th century for Sahitya Akademi.

She was also a skilled translator and essayist.

She was also a Senior Fellow of the Ministry of Culture and had also received the SAARC literature award in 2014.
