China on Friday congratulated Bangladesh on what it described as the successful conduct of its 13th National Parliamentary Elections and extended its best wishes to the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) following its electoral victory.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian conveyed the message in an official statement.

“Congratulations to Bangladesh on a smooth and successful election, and to the Bangladesh Nationalist Party on winning the election,” the statement said.

China reaffirmed its support for Bangladesh’s domestic political process and expressed readiness to further strengthen bilateral ties. Beijing also signalled its intent to deepen cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative, alongside broader engagement within the framework of the China-Bangladesh comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.

Election Results Declared

The congratulatory message followed the formal announcement of results in 297 parliamentary constituencies by the Election Commission of Bangladesh.

According to Bangladeshi daily Prothom Alo, results for Chattogram-2 and Chattogram-4 remain suspended and will be declared later, while one other constituency’s outcome had earlier been deferred. The Election Commission had issued suspension notices for Sherpur-2, Chattogram-2 and Chattogram-4 on February 12 due to pending court cases. Although Sherpur-2’s result has since been declared, its official gazette notification is currently on hold.

The elections were held alongside a national referendum, which recorded a voter turnout of 60.26 per cent.

Election Commission Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed, speaking at a press briefing in Agargaon, Dhaka, said that 48,074,429 voters supported the referendum proposals, while 22,565,627 voted against them.

Seat Distribution

In the parliamentary contest across the 297 declared seats, the BNP and its allies secured 212 seats, marking a decisive win.

An 11-party alliance led by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami won 77 seats. Islami Andolan Bangladesh secured one seat, while independent candidates won seven.

A detailed breakdown showed the BNP winning 209 seats independently. Jamaat-e-Islami secured 68 seats; the National Citizens Party (NCP) won six; Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis, two; Khelafat Majlis, one; Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP), one; Ganosamhati Andolon, one; and Gono Odhikar Parishad, one.

The referendum sought public endorsement of constitutional proposals contained in the July National Charter. The strong majority in favour of the proposals is expected to pave the way for the implementation of planned state reforms.
