Dinesh Trivedi was on Monday appointed as India’s next High Commissioner to Bangladesh, the Ministry of External Affairs said.

The appointment comes as both countries seek to repair bilateral ties that had come under strain during the tenure of Bangladesh’s interim government headed by Muhammad Yunus. Trivedi is expected to assume charge shortly.

He will succeed Pranay Verma, who has been appointed India’s next ambassador to Belgium and the European Union.

Relations between India and Bangladesh deteriorated after the collapse of the government led by Sheikh Hasina in August 2024 and the installation of the interim administration.

Officials said Verma later played a role in efforts to reset ties after the Bangladesh Nationalist Party government led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman came to power in February.

Earlier this month, Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman visited India and held talks with Ajit Doval and S. Jaishankar, focusing on trade, energy and people-to-people ties.

The two countries also began stabilisation efforts after Om Birla and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri attended Rahman’s swearing-in in Dhaka on February 17.
