One Indian sailor lost his life and four others suffered burn injuries after a wooden cargo dhow carrying general merchandise caught fire and capsized near the Strait of Hormuz, according to government sources.
The incident occurred on Friday near the strategically important maritime passage. The vessel, carrying 18 Indian crew members, reportedly caught fire before overturning at sea. The exact cause of the blaze is yet to be established.
Sources said all crew members were rescued by a passing ship after the emergency unfolded. However, one Indian national died in the incident, while four others sustained burn injuries.
The injured crew members have been shifted to Dubai for medical treatment and are said to be in stable condition.
Officials from the Consulate General of India met the rescued sailors soon after the incident and are coordinating assistance.
Sources said the consulate is also in contact with the dhow owner and is extending all necessary support to the affected crew members.
Earlier, Randhir Jaiswal had said that, following diplomatic engagement, 11 Indian ships had safely crossed the Strait of Hormuz, while 13 others remained in the Persian Gulf awaiting safe passage.
