Iran’s Ambassador to India, Mohammad Fathali, on Thursday said Tehran remains committed to implementing the recently concluded peace agreement with the United States, while stressing that the durability of the arrangement will depend on all sides honouring their commitments and maintaining mutual respect.

His remarks came shortly after US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian formally endorsed a 14-point memorandum designed to end hostilities between the two countries, facilitate the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and pave the way for negotiations on a broader long-term agreement over the next 60 days.

In an interview, Fathali described the accord as a potentially landmark development for regional and international stability.

“We believe this agreement could become a historic turning point for the region and global relations, provided all parties implement their obligations sincerely and responsibly,” he said.

The ambassador reiterated Iran’s willingness to comply with the terms of the understanding but noted that the experience of previous agreements continues to shape Tehran’s outlook. Referring to the 2015 nuclear accord, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), he pointed out that Iran had fulfilled its commitments while the United States later withdrew from the arrangement.

According to Fathali, the future of the new agreement will largely depend on whether all stakeholders adhere to the commitments they have undertaken.

“The sustainability of this agreement will be judged by the degree to which all parties respect and implement their obligations,” he said, cautioning that failure to do so could undermine both its continuity and effectiveness.

The agreement follows months of heightened tensions involving Iran, Israel and the United States. It lays out a framework aimed at reducing regional tensions, promoting economic cooperation and providing sanctions relief, while also creating space for future negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian welcomed the development, describing it on social media as a “historic document” and a reflection of “a strong Iran.” He emphasised that mutual respect remains central to Tehran’s approach toward achieving lasting peace.

Pezeshkian also reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to international peace, regional cooperation and national sovereignty, saying the country would continue to pursue progress while safeguarding its independence and dignity.

With the agreement now entering the implementation stage, global attention is focused on whether Washington and Tehran can translate the understanding into a lasting settlement. Both sides have indicated that trust, verification and adherence to commitments will be critical to the success of the process.
