Prime Minister Narendra Modi told President Joe Biden in their virtual interaction on the eve of the 2 plus 2 ministerial level talks in Washington that India has made attempts for peace between Russia and Ukraine and also sent humanitarian aid to Kyiv.

In a series of posts on Twitter about thhis interaction with Biden, Modi said they, “reviewed our bilateral cooperation, and discussed regional and global developments, including the situation in Ukraine.”

He reminded Biden that during his last visit to the USA in September, the President Biden had said that India-US partnership could contribute to the solution of many global problems. “I completely agree with you. As the world's two largest and oldest democracies, we are natural partners,” Modi told him.

"You gave a very important slogan at the very beginning of your tenure - Democracies can Deliver. The success of India-US partnership is the best way to make this slogan meaningful," Modi told Biden.

The Ministry of external Affairs issued the footage of their interaction on Twitter:

Prime Minister said, “Our talks today are taking place at a time when the situation in Ukraine remains very worrying. Till a few weeks ago, more than 20,000 Indians were stranded in Ukraine; and most of these were young students.”

Modi told the US President that he had spoken on the phone several times with the Presidents of both Ukraine and Russia. “Not only did I appeal for peace, but I also suggested President Putin to have direct talks with the President of Ukraine.” He told President Biden that the subject of Ukraine was also discussed in detail in the Parliament.

“We have also placed importance on the safety of the civilian population in Ukraine and the uninterrupted supply of humanitarian aid to them. On our behalf, we have sent medicines and other relief materials to Ukraine and its neighboring countries. And on the demand of Ukraine, we are sending another consignment of medicines very soon.”
