US President Donald Trump arrived in China on Wednesday for a high-stakes summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, marking his first state visit to the country since 2017.

Trump was received on arrival in Beijing by Chinese Vice President Han Zheng. US Ambassador to China David Perdue was also present during the reception.

Ahead of the visit, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said the two leaders would hold extensive discussions on bilateral ties and global issues.

“Heads-of-state diplomacy plays an irreplaceable role in providing strategic guidance for China-US relations,” Guo said during a press briefing.

Welcoming Trump’s visit, he added that the two leaders would exchange views on “major issues concerning China-US relations and world peace and development.”

“China stands ready to work with the US to expand cooperation and manage differences in the spirit of equality, respect and mutual benefit, and provide more stability and certainty for a transforming and volatile world,” he said.

The meeting marks the first in-person interaction between Trump and Xi since their meeting in Busan in October last year.

Ahead of the summit, the Chinese Embassy in the United States reiterated Beijing’s position on several sensitive issues, describing them as “four red lines” in China-US relations that must not be crossed.

In a post on X, the embassy listed the issues as:

  • The Taiwan question
  • Democracy and human rights
  • Political systems and development paths
  • China’s development rights

The statement underscored the tense backdrop to the summit, as both nations seek to manage strategic competition while maintaining diplomatic engagement.
