Police in New Zealand’s Auckland city are reported to have detained Baltej Singh, a relative of one of the assassins of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, for his alleged involvement in the drug trade.

He was allgedly found involved in organising the anti-India demonstrations in the country. His alleged involvement in drug trade underscores the criminal background and dubious motivations of pro-Khalistan demonstrators and the role of overseas support ito them for their attempts to tarnish the image of a progressive India.

Baltej is a nephew of Satwant Singh, who along with another bodyguard of the Prime Minister's security Beant Singh, had assassinated Indira Gandhi in October 1984.

Subsequently, the two were held guilty of murder and hanged on the orders of the court.

As per the information, the Aukland police recently raided a local property in Manukau and recovered substantial amounts of methamphetamine, concealed in beer cans.

The subsequent investigation allegedly led to Baltej Singh. It's not clear if he had been formally arrested or been detained for investigations.

According to official information, Satwant Singh's brother and his family had relocated to New Zealand in the 1980s where the family ran a small grocery shop in Auckland.

Baltej Singh had often been hailed in local Gurudwaras for being a relative of Satwant Singh.

However, a sudden increase in their wealth was noticed in recent months.

Baltej Singh's father became the proprietor of a real estate firm named Ray White and even bought a house valued at more than Rs 100 Crore.

Baltej Singh is known to be one the primary masterminds and fund raisers for anti-India and pro-Khalistan demonstrations organized in New Zealand. (with ANI
