Bill to set up private universities introduced in J-K assembly

A bill proposing the establishment of private universities in the Union Territory was introduced in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Thursday by Education Minister Sakeena Itoo.

The proposed legislation aims to facilitate the creation and regulation of private universities while ensuring high academic standards, quality education, and protection of students’ interests.

In a separate development, Assembly Secretary Manoj Kumar Pandit informed the House that Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has granted assent to three bills recently passed by the Assembly.

These include the Jammu and Kashmir Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill, 2026; the Jammu and Kashmir Eliminating Discrimination Against Persons Affected by Leprosy Bill, 2026; and the Jammu and Kashmir State Civil Courts (Amendment) Bill, 2026.
