In the age of instant blockbusters, success is often measured in opening weekend numbers and social media buzz. But true cinematic legacy is a far rarer achievement, one that unfolds over decades. And that’s where the comparison between Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge and Sholay starts to feel premature.

There’s no denying that Dhurandhar 2 has struck a chord with audiences. Its high-voltage storytelling, rooted in India’s geopolitical tensions, combined with director Aditya Dhar’s sharp narrative style, has made it a crowd-puller. The film’s intense action and nationalistic undertones have resonated strongly with a section of viewers, even as others critique it for being overly aggressive or polarising.

But popularity alone doesn’t guarantee permanence.

Unlike Dhurandhar 2, Sholay wasn’t tied to a specific moment in time. It told a universal story of friendship, revenge, and justice that transcended generations. More importantly, it embedded itself into everyday life. Its dialogues became cultural currency, its characters household names.

Lines like “Kitne aadmi the?” or “Tera kya hoga Kalia?” are not just remembered, they are lived, quoted, and reinvented even today.

Dhurandhar 2, despite its impact, doesn’t quite operate on that level. While it offers gripping moments and some memorable lines, it’s difficult to imagine them achieving the same timeless recall. History offers similar examples, films that dominated the moment but slowly faded from daily cultural conversation.

Even massive hits like Baahubali: The Beginning or Animal generated nationwide frenzy, yet their long-term cultural footprint hasn’t matched their initial explosion.

To its credit, Dhurandhar 2 does deliver strong performances. Actors like Ranveer Singh and Akshaye Khanna bring depth to key characters, and the film’s attempt to blend fiction with real-world inspiration adds to its immersive appeal. Some characters leave a mark, but the film as a whole struggles to create a fully memorable universe.

That’s where Sholay stands apart. Every character no matter how small felt iconic. From Jai and Veeru to Sambha and the jailer, each role contributed to a larger, unforgettable tapestry.

There’s also the question of universality.

Sholay balanced action with humour, romance, and emotional depth, making it accessible to all kinds of audiences. Dhurandhar 2, on the other hand, thrives on intensity and is deeply rooted in a specific socio-political context. While this gives it relevance today, it may also limit its timeless appeal.

None of this diminishes what Dhurandhar 2 has achieved. It has reignited theatre footfall, sparked conversations, and delivered a powerful cinematic experience. It may well earn a place among genre-defining films like Gangs of Wasseypur or Satya.

But Sholay exists in a league of its own.

Because while Dhurandhar 2 is winning the box office today, Sholay has already won time and that’s the ultimate test no film can fast-track.
