Filmmaker Sundar C is set to make his electoral debut in the April 23 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, contesting from the Madurai Central constituency as a candidate of the Puthiya Neethi Katchi (PNK), an ally in the AIADMK-led NDA.

The announcement was made by PNK founder-president A C Shanmugam, who said Sundar C will contest under the AIADMK’s ‘Two Leaves’ symbol.

His wife, senior BJP leader Khushbu Sundar, expressed pride over his political entry, saying he aims to serve the people of Tamil Nadu who have supported his three-decade-long film career.

She added that Sundar C has the backing of key NDA leaders, including AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami and BJP state president Nainar Nagendran.

Madurai Central is currently represented by DMK leader and state minister PTR Palanivel Thiagarajan, making the contest a high-profile one.

PNK, which traces its ideological roots to the early 20th-century Justice Party, draws support from sections of the Mudaliyar community. Interestingly, Thiagarajan’s grandfather, PT Rajan, was a prominent Justice Party leader.
